Increased investment in bioenergy makes logging debris applicable as fuel. But how quickly break logging waste down and what happens to the nutrient content of forest soil as pine needles and other logging debris removed from the forest? kowbojki
- Respiration, ie CO2 emissions from soil after harvesting, is highest where the remaining branches and tops, but also soil temperature plays a role, she explains, pointing towards a small nylon bags filled with pine needles, well hidden among grasses and small spruce plants.
We are in a slaughter sloping site with blueberry spruce Gaupen at the lake in Ringsaker municipality. Eldhuset and her colleagues have spent several summers at the logging site to help solve one of the greatest challenges: How to provide enough renewable energy to future carbon-neutral society?
To limit climate change Norwegian government increased investment in renewable energy sources, kowbojki including bioenergy. In this connection, logging waste is an important fuel.
- There is much talk about carbon sequestration in forests and on forest conservation to reduce emissions of CO2 to the atmosphere. kowbojki The fact is that most of the carbon in the forest is situated in the soil and not in the trees.
The carbon in the soil originated from dead plant residues. These are broken down when the soil living fungi and bacteria use them as food. Increased removal of all trees, ie branches and tops plus the trunk, makes less carbon and nutrients are returned to the soil.
Eldhuset collects several small mesh bags with needles and twigs. The areas where the bags were laid out already overgrown with grass, but thanks to the foot tall mark the pins, it is possible to find the bags again.
Scientists leave out many bags two years ago, and collect some of them every year. A similar effort they have just started kowbojki a nyhogd area of Vindberg Voss, where it is steeper, warmer and more humid than in Gaupen.
- That way we can study how the decomposition process takes place, and compare processes in two areas with different terrain and climate conditions, says plant scientist.
Sample analyzes are performed in the laboratory quickly tells where the needles and twigs are broken down, and the amount of carbon and nutrients they lose in this process. For example, a quarter of twig mass and a third of nålemassen in bags on Gaupen degraded kowbojki during the first year.
- These results, combined with data on the amount of needles and twigs were removed from the nyhogde kowbojki woods we use to calculate how much carbon and nutrients cutting surface loses the solid extraction, explains Eldhuset.
A cylinder placed above ground sucks in air from the soil and leads it into an infrared CO2 gas analyzer. The pole stuck in the ground and measure the temperature and humidity kowbojki in the soil. The purpose of the measurements kowbojki is to study changes in respiration kowbojki from the soil after harvesting and after removal of branches and tops (porridge) from the logging site. Eldhuset says that many forest owners are worried about such a solid withdrawals will remove essential nutrients from cutting surface so that new plants do not grow as well in the future, and that it may be used fertilizer to compensate for the loss.
- We put out small spruce kowbojki plants that we follow kowbojki closely throughout the experiment. In addition, we use data from other and older attempt to look at the effects on forest production in the long term, says Eldhuset.
Her colleague Kjersti Holt Hanssen, seen on older thinning experiments showing that the remaining trees grow worse part where it was made solid wood thinning, which is where both the trunk and branches were removed in thinning.
- It turns out that there is a big difference between experimental plots, but on average fir trees grown about ten percent less the first 20 years after it has been made solid wood thinning.
