Art Talk 12/06/2013: unknown master gieves and hawkes Lego City! Come fly with me! | Blog about communication, art and mourn David
For several weeks I scroll on Galeries.nl along the Toy Museum in Deventer. Again and again I stay a while to hang in the image that has made the museum, which is about the great Lego exhibition. And every time I struggled to pull me then again loose. I know that picture for years. I grew up with Lego - what kid does not? Lego made it possible to achieve dreams. Tangible. Palpable. Fantasy Baar.
And now Lego fills our house. And I fantasize away at the boxes and see my son dreamed of building houses a prison. I lie with him on the ground and catch criminals. Invent nonsense stories by ambulance and a doll that we have named Dr. Frankenstein. I am sometimes fanatical than he.
But more and more I catch him that his Lego late for what it is. Nests dust accumulate in the ruins of what recently was an ambitious project. Then I see him sitting behind gieves and hawkes the iPad or laptop, play with 'games' virtual gieves and hawkes city building, castles, trenches - fighting delivering zombies and combative pigs just come trotting straight from the imagination of programmers - not his. And then comes over me carefully gieves and hawkes a sadness that might not be true, but I can not shake off. I intend to go later in the Great Vacation days mopping the floor with my son and his Lego. Maybe for the last time. Before he finally moves into the virtual world and online with 'friends' from everywhere to get started. Far from home, but close.
Here has been a master at work. Someone who understands how to put down a concept. Who understands how you can fantasize that you circle your heli on your dream city. And the more I look at it, the more I think it's an absolute work of art. Then once the LP was normal, gieves and hawkes regular exhibitions were held on the artwork of the LP covers. Pink Floyd - Umma Gumma, Stones - Sticky Fingers, Miles Davis - Bitches Brew - and so forth. It was awfully applied art and it was so awful enjoy. No, it is still enjoying.
To my knowledge there has never been an exhibition on the covers of Lego Boxes. It is high time. Inflated fullscreen. A room full. And in a separate room the same images, but then processed by vandaagse artists.
